Neighbors say they don’t believe the shooting was an accident. “They said he was shot for being a Jew,” one neighbor told CBS2’s David Goldstein. “He was in here having a beer before his Shabbat,” said another neighbor. “He was shot because he was Jewish,” another neighbor said. “They see the truck is Jewish, they go to shoot him because he is Jewish.” Irvine police Sgt. Daniel Benton said the suspect is a white man. Neighbors say the victim was about to enter the Walmart when the suspect pulled up and shot him multiple times, hitting him at least twice. “He was gunned down at the entrance to the store. He was exiting and the person exited and started shooting,” Benton said. “It’s one of those things, where you don’t know if somebody just did it,” said another neighbor. “You don’t know what’s going on.” The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Benton says this is a frightening development in the region. “This is certainly not a good thing to see,” Benton said. “Any time, anyplace, anybody is shot for any reason, it’s a concern.” Police said there was no indication that this was a hate crime, and they weren’t immediately aware of a possible motive. They are working with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office to determine if any charges are appropriate. The suspect was described as a white man who drove a dark-colored truck.
