If you've ever been afflicted with writer's block, you'll know it's no laughing matter — it can impede your writing for days, weeks, or even months. And while it's tempting to just ignore the problem and hope that it goes away, writer's block is one of those pests that requires active extermination. Here are 10 quick and easy solutions for unblocking your imagination. 1. Get away from your desk. Writer's block is often caused by an inability to focus, or by feeling too comfortable in the familiar surroundings of our writing space. Jump up, get away from your desk, and do something else for a while; come back later refreshed and with a clearer mind. 2. Breath deeply... ...and imagine where you would like to be in five years time. 3. Reminisce about when you were ten years old (or when you were in the best place in the world). 4. Imagine the scene — see it — and then write down what you see. 5. Make a list of useful phrases and words you wish you knew as a writer. 6. Make a list of common phrases and words that writers use, and write down how they might be used in your own writing. 7. Take some time to do some research, for example about famous authors or important topics in history, and then jot words and phrases that come to mind as you read about them or think about them (try to avoid using jargon or obscure words). 8. Make a list of what you like and dislike about your writing, and make a note of what you can do to improve your writing. 9. Write down five topics that interest you as a writer, and write ten points about each topic. 10. Take a break from writing, or write something completely different for a while, then come back later with refreshed eyes and write whichever idea appeals to you most.
